Market Studies 2.0 — Chart Any Metric Instantly
We just shipped one of the biggest usability upgrades ever! What used to require a full backtest flow can now be done in seconds directly inside Market Studies — with nested studies and live signaling.
Here’s exactly what you need to know and how to use the new features step by step.
1. Plot Any Metric on a Chart — No Backtest Required
Before: You had to go to the Stock Screener → pick ticker → pick metric → launch “Measure Trace” backtest.
Now: Just do it directly in Market Studies.
Step-by-step:
Open Market Studies.
Select your ticker (e.g., SPY).
Select the metric you want to plot.
Choose the visualization style & scale.
Click Apply.
That’s it. The entire history loads instantly. No backtest setup, no waiting.
2. Add Secondary Studies
You can now layer studies on any series already on your chart — including price, metrics, or even other studies.
How to do it:
Click +Series.
Choose Secondary Study.
Select which series the study should be based on (e.g., SPY price).
Pick the study (e.g., Bollinger Bands).
Rename it if you want (e.g., “Bollinger Bands for SPY”).
Click Apply.
The study appears immediately.
3. Studies Now Come in Smart Groups
Every study you add lives in its own toggleable container:
Turn the entire study on/off with one click.
Expand it to see every individual line/component inside.
Toggle visibility and change color per line (great for hiding series you might not need, for example).
Change study rules on the fly.
4. Nested Studies: Run Studies on Studies
This is where things get really exciting.
You can apply a secondary study to another secondary study.
My Example Workflow:
You have Bollinger Bands on SPY (as a secondary study).
Click Add secondary study again.
Set the source to the Bollinger Bands Width series.
Add Standard Deviation Bands (set to 2.0).
Click Generate signal and define your condition (e.g., “when Bollinger Bands get wide enough”).
Click Apply (and optionally change the signal color).
You now have a signal generated from a study that itself sits on top of another study — all updating live.
This lets you create “second-derivative” signals extremely quickly.
5. Everything Is Recursive — Change Once, Everything Updates
All studies and signals are now live and interconnected.
Try this:
Edit the original Bollinger Bands (click the study → Edit → change to 50-day window and 1 standard deviation).
Hit Apply.
Watch the downstream Standard Deviation Bands and the signal update automatically.
Go to the Signal Analysis tab → your signal stats instantly reflect the new rules (my signal count dropped from 341 to 289, for example).
No more recreating studies or re-running backtests just to test a parameter change. This is the biggest time-saver in the update.
6. Analyze Signals Instantly
Once you have a signal:
Go to the Signal Analysis tab.
Choose your benchmark and signal combination.
You’ll instantly see:
Number of signals
Median and average returns of benchmark after signal is generated
Probability of ending higher
This used to be slow. Now it’s near-instant, even with hundreds of signals.
7. Exporting Data (Research Lane Fills Only On Download)
Go to Actions > Export to CSV
Toggle exactly which series and date ranges you want.
The research lane cost is shown clearly before you export.
Viewing and interacting with series on the platform does not use up your research lane.
You only pay research lane allocation when you actually download the CSV for personal use.
This is a PRO-only feature.
8. Dependency Warnings (Important!)
Because studies can depend on each other:
If you delete a base series (e.g., the original price data), the platform will warn you that all dependent studies and signals will be deleted too.
This protects you from accidentally breaking complex setups.
Treat this as your rapid prototyping lab for signals and regimes. Iterate ideas in minutes instead of hours.
Remember: This is currently a drafting and research tool. You can’t yet send these studies/signals directly into strategy backtests (that’s coming soon).
What used to take multiple backtests and duplicated studies can now be done live on one chart with instant feedback. This is a genuine leap in how fast you can explore, test, and refine ideas in financial markets.
Go try it right now in Market Studies. Plot something, layer a couple of studies, generate a signal, tweak a parameter, and watch everything update live.
Excited to see what you come up with :)
As always,
Happy Investing!
